Exclusive sperm donor rights: Regional and global donor exclusivity

Many prospective parents explore the concept of regional or global donor exclusivity when selecting a sperm donor. Pregnancy quotas ensure ethically and biologically fair distribution of donor conceived children, while exclusivity further limits the number of donor children conceived by the chosen donor.

What is donor exclusivity?

Sperm donor exclusivity refers to an arrangement where a sperm donor whose sperm donations have not yet been used within a particular region (or globally) can be selected as an exclusive donor.

This limits the number of families per donor as the chosen donor is solely used for one recipient, ensuring that the donor's genetic material isn't used to conceive children in other families globally, or within a specified region.

It is important to note that a donor may have children of his own, regardless of exclusivity.

Why choose exclusivity?

Exclusivity ensures that while a donor may have children of his own, no other families will share a genetic link through donation.

Many parents are drawn to this arrangement for several reasons:

  • Minimised risk of accidental half-sibling encounters, especially in small communities or future dating scenarios.
  • Clarity and simplicity in the child’s origin story, making it easier to navigate questions of identity and biology.
  • Greater control over the donor’s genetic legacy, limiting widespread use or unknown donor siblings.
  • Compliance with personal ethical preferences and peace of mind, particularly for those who value exclusivity in their family narrative.

Exclusivity supports a more secure and intentional donor conception journey.

Deciding the scope: Regional or global exclusivity?

Regional

With regional exclusivity, you own all your donor's pregnancy quotas in the selected region, and the donor's sperm is restricted from use within this particular geographical area. A region can be defined by a country's borders or other regional definitions.

Regional exclusivity is typically chosen by those who wish to minimise the chances of their child accidentally encountering a genetic half-sibling in their local community or country.

With regional exclusivity, half-siblings can still be conceived outside of the chosen region.

In order to get regional exclusivity on a donor, you will be purchasing all pregnancy quotas for your donor for the relevant region. Pregnancy quotas cost between €437.50 and €687.50 per quota depending on the region.

Global

Global exclusivity takes this a step further. You will own all the donor's existing sperm straws and pregnancy quotas, ensuring that the donor's sperm won't be used to conceive children for any other family worldwide, except for his own.

Global exclusivity provides the ultimate level of assurance for parents seeking complete control over their chosen donor's amount of donor offspring.

To gain global exclusivity on a donor, you will be purchasing all of your donor's existing straws, with a starting fee of €30,000.
